Safer Laundry Detergents

Having been through the laundry list ;) of detergents, I figured I would share my favorite go-to safer brands for those of you looking to make an easy clean swap in your everyday life.

We are all washing clothes and doing laundry. Making the swap to a safer alternative in your detergent is such an easy way to dramatically reduce the toxic load exposure to you and your family. So without further ado, here is my short list of detergents I recommend for those starting out.

CLEANER DETERGENTS

Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent Packs – I love this product for the conscientious consumer on-the-go. We are not always on top of ordering products online before they run out. And with kids at home and sometimes multiple loads in a day, we need to be able to grab detergent in a pinch at the store if need be. This is a great and safe option, and can be found on the shelves of most grocery and department stores.

My Green Fills – My Green Fills detergents are consumer and eco friendly. You have the option to purchase one bottle of the detergent, or order a subscription with scheduled refills. Either way, you are mailed one detergent bottle, and then any time you need a refill, the concentrate is sent your way. The formulation is not only safe, but is also eco-friendly due to the reuse of the plastic container. And best yet – it smells good. When avoiding fragrances in detergents, it is often hard to find detergents that leave your clothes fresh-smelling; this one does the trick!

Branch Basics – Like My Green Fills, this is also a subscription service. What I find extremely cool about Branch Basics, is that it is the same concentrate formula for laundry detergent, bathroom cleaner, kitchen cleaner (and MORE uses) alike! So there are LOTS of uses with this concentrate. When sent your concentrate, you will be given instructions as to how much water to add to the concentrate to use as laundry detergent. But even more than the detergent, I personally love their oxygen boost to get out those tough baby stains and brighten dulled whites. I also love to add my own essential oils to the detergent, to leave my clothes smelling fresh.

Dropps  – This eco- and safe-conscious company sells detergent pods that are taking care of human and earth in a number of ways. The pods are made with safe ingredients, so you can be sure you are taking care of your family’s needs without compromising on ingredient safety (the detergent scents are derived from essential oils and botanics). But what I find just as cool – the pods are encapsulated in a water-soluble pod that dissolves in the wash, reducing the use of plastics from start to finish. It is a subscription service, and can easily be altered, paused or canceled. You get as much or as little, as frequently or infrequently as you need.

Mollysuds - this is my personal pick for “best bang for your buck.” I love this company for so many reasons - it was created in homage to the owners’ late daughter, they are earth- and consumer-friendly in ingredient selection, and they disclose 100% of their ingredients. I have been using this detergent for quite a while. And as someone with a 4 (and growing!) size family, getting my money’s worth and finding an affordable detergent that works is a top priority. We have had no issues with sensitivity, we find that the detergent does a wonderful job, and it is scented “peppermint” - so your clothes coming out smelling so fresh and so clean. I LOVE this detergent!

Happy & safe laundry-ing, my friends!
